Multicultural education is a set of educational strategies developed to provide students with knowledge about the histories, cultures and contributions of diverse groups, promoting inclusion, diversity, democracy and critical thought. James A. Banks, a leading theorist and former president of the National Council for the Social Studies and the American Educational Research Association, argued that citizenship education must be transformed to address deepening racial, ethnic, cultural, language and religious diversity.
