The first Waldorf school opened on 7 September 1919 in Stuttgart, Germany, as a school for the children of workers at the Waldorf-Astoria cigarette factory. Rudolf Steiner developed and directed its anthroposophy-based pedagogy while factory director Emil Molt supplied the funding, buildings and first pupils, a genuinely shared founding. It became the model for the worldwide Waldorf school movement, which grew to seventeen schools within fourteen years.
