The National University of Rwanda was the largest university in Rwanda, located in the city of Butare. It was established in 1963 by the government in cooperation with the Congregation of the Dominicans from the Province of Quebec, Canada, with its founder and first rector Father Georges-Henri Levesque. The university closed during the 1994 genocide and reopened in 1995; in 2013 it was merged into the newly created University of Rwanda.
