The State University of Haiti is one of Haiti's most prestigious institutions of higher education, located in Port-au-Prince. Its origins trace to the 1820s, when colleges of medicine and law were established; the various faculties merged into the University of Haiti in 1942, and after a 1960 student strike the government of Francois Duvalier brought the university under firm government control and renamed it the State University of Haiti. The university's buildings were largely destroyed in the January 2010 earthquake.
