Sudbury Valley School, in Framingham, Massachusetts, opened in 1968 as the first fully democratic school in the United States, serving students from four to nineteen with no fixed curriculum and no mandatory classes. Students and staff hold equal votes in a direct-democracy School Meeting, and the school became the founding model for the international Sudbury school movement. It was founded by a group including Daniel Greenberg, Hanna Greenberg, Joan Rubin and Mimsy Sadofsky rather than by any single founder.
