The University of Paris emerged around 1150 as a corporation associated with the cathedral school of Notre-Dame, was formally recognized as a universitas by King Philippe-Auguste in 1200, and received papal recognition in 1215 through regulations issued by Pope Innocent III's legate Robert de Courcon. It became highly reputed internationally in the humanities, particularly theology and philosophy, teaching through four faculties, Arts, Medicine, Law and Theology, already formally established by 1254. Students were organized into four nationes by language or regional origin (France, Normandy, Picardy and England) and lodged in colleges, boarding houses rather than teaching centers, the best known being the College of Sorbonne, founded in 1257. The university was dissolved in 1970, after the May 1968 student protests, and divided into thirteen successor universities.
