The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a public land-grant research university in Madison, Wisconsin, United States, and the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System. It was founded in 1848 when Wisconsin achieved statehood. Its main campus of 933 acres sits on the shores of Lake Mendota, and the university is one of the founding members of the Association of American Universities.
