American author, feminist theorist and educator, born Gloria Jean Watkins, who wrote under a lowercase pen name (taken from her maternal great-grandmother) to keep attention on her ideas rather than her identity. Her Teaching to Transgress developed engaged pedagogy, drawing on her own education in segregated Kentucky schools to argue that teaching should be a practice of freedom, love and transformation.
