Czech (Moravian) philosopher, theologian and priest of the Bohemian Unity of Brethren, forced by religious persecution to spend most of his life in exile across Poland, Sweden, England and the Netherlands. His Didactica Magna reasoned that children are born with a natural craving for knowledge rather than innate evil, and argued for universal education, of the poor and of women included, delivered through a graded, developmentally sequenced curriculum; he is widely called the father of modern education.
