Jay McTighe is an American educator and consultant who, together with Grant Wiggins, developed Understanding by Design, the backward-design framework for curriculum planning, first published in 1998 and since translated into fourteen languages across eighteen co-authored books. He worked as a classroom teacher, resource specialist and program coordinator in Prince George's County, Maryland, later directing the Maryland Assessment Consortium and helping lead the state's standards-based assessment reforms, before founding McTighe & Associates to continue training and consulting internationally on the framework.
