John Sweller is an Australian educational psychologist at the University of New South Wales, where he became Professor Emeritus in 2020. In the late 1980s he developed cognitive load theory out of research on problem solving, arguing that instructional design must respect the severe limits of working memory, and he has since published more than eighty academic works applying that idea to how material should be presented to learners.
